Duncan Diary

Last night, Wednesday night, while Daddy was at computer programming with Malcolm, I pulled the thermostat off the wall.  Several times.

Now one of the batteries is _______________________

I saw the black garbage bags that mom moved from under the small sink to the pantry.

After I get somebody to open the pantry, I stand there a long time, not making a decision about what food or drink or straw to grab, instead I grab the bag. Bite. Quick.

Later, I will slyly snatch a black bag and try to run down the hall to my room with it. Mom tells me no. I hesitate, but she walks towards me, so I bite it and throw it down and run.

HAHAHAHAHAH

Later, when I am stealing cinnamon, I will spill a bunch on the plastic bag and bite it again.

Just before Mom went to bed, I was sitting on the couch - in the black bag - I had stepped into the bag and sat on the couch, so that I could watch tv and keep stretching the plastic up to shred pieces off.

I like to nip pieces off objects - any, object, really, any - then spit them playfully.

Nobody else thinks this is funny, but I laugh when they tell me to stop.

sticks of butter

Duncan unwrapped four sticks of butter.

I saw them scattered on the top of his nearly new personal trampoline.

I got a dinner plate and had him put them on the plate.

Issy's Mom's actions were not the murderous cry to sanction killing vulnerable children
It was defeat

It was not wanting to leave her daughter

Music

Overviews of Autism in the media usually mention music.

Numbers and music. Visual literacy.

We bought Duncan kiddie instruments - all at Helen Court - guitar, bongos, drum kit. Microphones. They all became landfill.

Music was part of the Arizona treatment. We bought a musical mattress. But for the longest time, well until just weeks ago, he could never have a bed.

Brett hooked it up again this week, after Duncan has shown interest in music.

We pulled out a bunch of old dvds and cds.

He chose Baby Songs and watched it over and over. Brett finally added it to his Ipad.

One hot afternoon after school, Dunc and I returned home.

I opened the activities folder in Pro Lo Quo

He picked "Listen to Music"

He went and lay down on the bed under the ceiling fan and played "Fantasia"

NetFlix has allowed him some exercise of choice too.

Interestingly, he has been picking _The Nightmare Before Christmas_.

We found _Corpse Bride_ on Amazon Prime streaming too.

He loves them.

I picked _Coraline_ for him, but it's no good, it seems. I think it's missing the music.

This is wonderful; for him to enjoy something.

ipad dreams

Yesterday, Duncan used his ipad fairly independently.

He went to the PLQ activities folder and chose "Listen to Music" and he laid in the cool bedroom, on that 106 degree afternoon, and listened to "Baby Songs" which he loves, from his childhood.

He also likes Fantasia.

For awhile, it seemed that his interest in the ipad was gone; that it was too connected to his idea of school.

Ardene and I spoke of it on our walk.

It has been since that morning that I have been more consistent in having Duncan use the ipad to make all kinds of requests.

The activities folder is growing. That is a very good thing.

One of the best moments was when he went to activities with Brett and it didn't seem all together deliberate, or not all of it, but he picked "your turn" and "my turn"

"You want to play?" asked Brett

And I am not sure if he deliberately hit tickle, but the ipad said "Your turn, my turn, tickle"

They were on the bed when this happened and Brett started to tickle Duncan and it was sooooo cute and funny!

After that he selected "hose" and they went to the back yard where Brett has used a splitter to run both the outdoor sink and hose.

This morning, Tuesday August 20, 2013, he used the ipad to request "Yoo-Hoo"

Balloons. Not going to the sink, but to the hose

He is working his way around the house.

We need to secure the garden.

He got the hose into his room again. And into the building area of his remodeled bathroom.

So, Brett went back to the short hose, which is now submerged in about half a foot of water.

Information Technology

I want to show Duncan a schedule for today.

Pro Lo Quo has a fabulous reference of pictures, but I can't use them in i-prompts for timer or schedule.

I tried to use Pro Lo Quo for narrating with Dunc and for documenting our receipe, but it doesn't save the typing in a docuemtn.

What did Ardene use to capture conversation?

CONSTANT Destruction

Sunday February 24, 2013

Duncan's extreme behavior has made the RDI stuff mandatory.

He can not be left in a room alone.

Therefore, instead of locking him out of the kitchen, I locked him in with me.

Recipe: chicken paprika.

rice first. (found rice on pro lo quo)
he measured.

Ingredients:

Bell Peppers (he got them from fridge)
Onions
Garlic

He wants to  used knife like a cleaver and hack.

His obsession with water is more intense and his need for lightbulbs too.

Seems like when we try to indulge the need - ie play with the hose - it just makes it harder for him to stop.

He charges into the kitchen and turns on the faucet.

Fills things (balloons, pans in the sink) with water and dumps it on the floor of his room.

Dad watched him a few nights ago, Thursday, and the kitchen gates were locked. He could only be in the front living room and front bath.  By the time we got home, he had destroyed the bathroom lighting.

Brett has replaced fixtures in the kitchen and bathrooms.

He stayed home Friday (so long to any hours I had planned to spend doing my deskwork) because of his cold.  At least the last 2 nights he has slept and today his nose seems better
