Been using the iPrompts app for iPad. It's really more to be sure that he can understand us than it is for him communicate with us, though that is the ultimate goal.
The picture with inset of sign language has helped us.
Sign is his best hope of communicating with anybody, even though his signs are just approximations.
I used the calendar Ardene made in Boardmaker to indicate that this is a Friday and we'll have a party tomorrow.
